Director Phil Lord Updates on DCCU's FLASH Movie

Movie News

With The Flash currently making waves on the small screen, there’s been very little news on the Scarlet Speedster’s big screen debut.

Whilst The CW’s Flash is nearing the end of its first season (with the season finale airing tonight in the US and next Tuesday in the UK), all has been very quiet on the DC Cinematic Universe’s Flash. We know that Ezra Miller is to play the DCCU’s Sultan of Speed and that the character has a solo movie booked in and a couple of Justice League appearances, but all is eerily quiet on any other news. The LEGO Movie’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller are on board to direct, and Lord has been speaking to The Hippojuice Podcast about the film.

The director said, “We’re trying to break a story. It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright. I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen. We’re more trying to stick with the Cinematic Universe. It really is its own thing and is kind of a standalone movie. We’re trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff. I’m optimistic.”

Hmmm. Kind of sounds to us that one of the big problems is trying to make a Flash story that is different to the TV show, yet the TV show is doing so many things so well that it’s becoming an almost-definitive Barry Allen tale. How do you do a great Barry Allen Flash movie when you’re trying to differentiate yourself from the Barry Allen Flash show that is doing thing so brilliantly? Quite the pickle, no?

Of course, if the powers that be at Warner Brothers had the foresight to make the most of the great strides made in the television world by both Arrow and The Flash, and with spin-off DC’s Legends of Tomorrow also on the way, then that would’ve helped to smooth out certain issues by trying to tie things together or even using a different cinematic Flash. As it stands, we’ll instead have two versions of the Barry Allen Flash over the next few years.

Lord and Miller’s The Flash, starring Ezra Miller, is currently set for March 23rd, 2018, with the character expected to play a part in Zack Snyder’s two-part Justice League. There’s also talk that the DCCU Flash could even have a cameo in next year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. As for the small screen Scarlet Speedster, as mentioned, the Grant Gustin-starring The Flash is set to conclude its first season tonight in the US and next Tuesday in the UK.
