Seems this is the week for resuscitating projects from development hell. In the past year, along with Guillermo Del Toro’s AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, Universal decided to cancel Ron Howard’s adaptation of Stephen King’s THE DARK TOWER series. It was an ambitious project, reportedly taking place across three films and a TV series, and Universal balked at the hefty price tag. Now it seems that the project may still be going ahead.

Producer Brian Grazer recently gave an interview to The Playlist and revealed they have cut a significant amount of the budget and that unusually, rather than compromise their artistic vision, this has actually made the script for the first movie stronger with a better ending. They have cut 45 million from the budget without compromising the epic scope so now the budget is a more modest 100 million or so.

No word on a definite start date or whether Javier Bardem is still playing Roland Deschain but this is definitely a step closer to reality. THE DARK TOWER series is one of the books I’ve been meaning to pick up for a while as I’m a big Stephen King fan. The only exposure I have had to the series was the Marvel comic adaptations a few years back which were very impressive looking. What do you think? Is this something that you have been dying to see?
