Movie News

The last day or so has seen writer/director Kevin Smith take to Twitter to confirm that both Shannen Doherty and Jason Lee will be returning for his recently-announced MALLRATS 2.

Firstly confirming Doherty, Smith posted the following image with the caption: “’Brenda?’ On the new BABBLE-ON, @DohertyShannen says she’s going back to the MALL, ya’ll! 5 down and 7 to go… #MR2”

Kev also added on Facebook, “This is special to me because it was Shando herself who single-handedly got MALLRATS the green-light back in ’95! So Rene returns, as the RATS roll call continues! 5 down and 7 to go! Collect ‘em all!”

Doherty played Rene Mosier in Smith’s MALLRATS, the on-off-on girlfriend of Jason Lee’s Brodie Bruce. Revealing that Lee will also be returning (as if the film could ever really happen without him?!), Smith posted the below image along with the caption: “’Saaayy… Would YOU like a chocolate covered pretzel?’ BRODIE IS BACK! So by the end of this year, Jason Lee is coming to the MALL, ya’ll! 6 down, 6 to go! Collect ‘em all! #Mallrats2”

In his posts Smith refers to how many are “to go”, by which he means returning cast members yet to sign on. As well as Jason Lee and Shannen Doherty, it’s also been confirmed that Michael Rooker will be back as Jared Svenning, Stan Lee will be returning in some form, and then there will, of course, be an appearance from Jason Mewes and Smith himself as Jay and Silent Bob.

As for who the other returning names are, we'd have to guess that Jeremy London's T.S. Quint, Ben Affleck's Shannon Hamilton and Claire Forlani's Brandi Svenning are likely, with the other possibilities being Joey Lauren Adams' Gwen, Renee Humphrey's Trish the Dish (although apparently no one calls her that), Ethan Suplee's Willan, Priscilla Barnes' Miss Ivannah or maybe even Scott Mosier's Roddy. Hell, it could even by Brian O'Halloran's Gill Hicks or the Easter bunny!

No release date has been given for the film as of yet, but expect to hear more on this as it develops. All of us here at Moonbase Alpha, we absolutely cannot wait to see Brodie and the gang back and on the big screen.
