Movie News

Last week saw an awesome concept trailer surface online for an effort from Ruairi Robinson called THE LEVIATHAN. Well now comes word that some serious talent has boarded the project in order to develop the concept into a full movie.

Deadline is reporting that Simon Kinberg will be producing, with Neill Blomkamp on board to executive produce. Kinberg is best known for his work on the likes of JUMPER, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, STAR WARS REBELS and the upcoming FANTASTIC FOUR redo. As for Blomkamp, he exploded onto the genre scene with the fantastic DISTRICT 9 and has gone on to helm ELYSIUM and CHAPPIE, with him also recently confirmed to be directing an eagerly-anticipated new ALIEN movie.

The actual LEVIATHAN movie itself still officially has no studio home, although Kinberg has his fingers in the pies of both 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm/Disney. The ‘proof of concept’ trailer that was released initially was impressive enough, but you’d have to think that the movie itself will be a huge, SFX-heavy affair.

Premise-wise, the project centres on involuntary drafted pilots in the 22nd century who have to hunt giant whale-like flying beasties.

As for Ruairi Robinson, he actually has previous when it comes to genre filmmaking, having directed the Live Schreiber-starring THE LAST DAYS OF MARS back in 2013.

Expect more on all of this as it develops, and in case you missed it here’s the concept trailer for THE LEVIATHAN:
