Cameron Romero Directing NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD Prequel

It’s been a tumultuous forty-five years since the release of George A. Romero’s seminal NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (still the best zombie movie, incidentally). The zombie has become an unlikely pop culture phenomenon and continues to claw in the big bucks. 2015 ushers in a new chapter for all things walking dead, with Romero’s son Cameron making his own zombie flick.

Of course, the son of Romero (who also directed AUTEUR) isn’t just making any old living dead movie; he’s concocting a prequel to his father’s masterpiece. Titled ORIGINS, the prequel is being produced by Radar Pictures and due to start filming this year. Already an accomplished filmmaker, Romero junior is directing a script written alongside Bryce C. Campbell and Darrin Reed. Special effects alumni Robert Kurtzman will be on make-up for the film. Having raised over $30,000 via crowd-funding, only time will tell if it’ll use a similar aesthetic to the original.

The official synopsis reads: ‘Set in the turbulent late sixties, the film tells the story of a brilliant scientist, Dr Alan Cartwright, who strikes a deal with the military that will give him all the resources he needs to finalise his work for what he later learns is a price all mankind will have to pay.’ Neither a cast or release date have been revealed.

While it’s unlikely to capture audiences in the same way as its grungy predecessor, it’ll be interesting to see how just it all started.

More details as they emerge.
