With Tim Burton recently claiming that a BEETLEJUICE sequel is now closer than ever, some further details are starting to emerge on a new outing for the beloved ghost.

In a piece in The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith has confirmed that the current plan is to bring Michael Keaton back for the film and to set the action in the modern day. The report says that Grahame-Smith is “rejecting the idea of rebooting the movie with a new star in favour of bringing Michael Keaton back in a sequel set in the present day.” This coming after some mild suggestion that the film may do a GHOSTBUSTERS and be a reboot with a new cast, as per Paul Feig’s planned all-female relaunch of that particular franchise. Additionally, this latest report saw Grahame-Smith adding that the current plan of attack on the Betelgeuse character is “less is more”, suggesting that he won’t be forced down fan’s throats throughout the film.

As ever, this is all still preliminary at this stage, with a BEETLEJUICE sequel not even official just yet. Still, with Burton saying it’s closer than it’s ever been and with Grahame-Smith looking to pen a script, things certainly look to be finally moving forward on the long-discussed follow-up.
