With a new PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN now long-confirmed, it appears that we could be about to see the franchise possibly rebooted in some way. Orlando Bloom dropped the news in a recent interview with IGN.

Asked if he’ll be returning for this next installment in Jerry Bruckheimer’s money-making series, Bloom said, “I’m not entirely sure that [I’ll be back] just yet, but there are talks. Basically they want to reboot the whole franchise, I think, and do something with me and the relationship with my son. I’m, of course, Davey Jones now, so I’m down the bottom of the ocean. It might be kind of fun to do something where I’m rumbling round the bottom of the ocean, because I won’t look anything like me.”

Whilst not confirmed as a reboot, the next entry in the franchise is PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, with Javier Bardem and Brenton Thwaites added to the cast of familiar faces - from previous reports, Johnny Depp will be back as Captain Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush will be back as Captain Barbossa. Whilst Thwaties’ role is currently unknown, Bardem is set to play the villain of the piece, Captain Brand.

Whether Bloom’s comments about a possible reboot prove to be true, we’ll have to wait and see. The franchise itself has been a big time cash-cow for those involved, with the last installment, 2011’s ON STRANGER TIDES, grossing over $1 billion at the global box office.

To be directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, with Bruckheimer producing, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is currently set for a July 7th, 2017 release.
