Someday there will be great chapters in a book all about great unmade films that will go into detail about Darren Aronofksy’s aborted attempts at bringing Wolverine and Robocop back to our screens. Sadly each project seems to have fallen apart, usually through creative differences or in the case of THE WOLVERINE, personal issues. Despite having a new director, THE WOLVERINE in its current James Mangold directed state will, according to Hugh Jackman himself, thankfully still bear a lot of similarities to the project Aronofsky cooked up.

Pleasingly the aforementioned issues haven’t prevented Aronofsky from moving on with other projects. His long gestating Noah’s Ark project simply titled NOAH has been given the green light at Paramount. The budget is somewhere around the $130 million range and John Logan has been brought onboard to do a polish of initial drafts by Aronofsky and Ari Handel.

Most intriguingly for Starburst readers is this 2007 quote from Aronofsky about his version of the biblical tale:

"the traditional Noah story, but told in a serious way... more the sci-fi version than comedy..."

Lest you think this a risky project, remember Mel Gibson’s THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST made an amazing amount of money back in 2004. A biblical epic from the man who gave us THE FOUNTAIN and BLACK SWAN is an enticing prospect indeed.

Production is scheduled to begin spring 2012 with a 2013 release likely.
