Sony Planning All-Female Spidey Film?

So you have a Sam Raimi-helmed franchise that got panned for SPIDER-MAN 3’s excesses, you decide to relaunch the whole thing but get criticised for making the reboot too soppy. What’s your solution? Why that’d be too cram a whole load of action, characters and teases into THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, with all eyes firmly on future films rather than focussing on the film at hand. When that film ends up slammed by fans and critics alike, the attention then moved to spin-offs VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX, with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 pushed all the way back to 2018. And now comes word that Sony is seriously considering moving forward with an all-female Spider-verse team-up movie of sorts.

Badass Digest is reporting that the all-female concept, currently titled GLASS CEILING, is Sony’s way of getting on the female-led bandwagon that has seen Marvel Studios announce CAPTAIN MARVEL and Warner Brothers looking at giving Wonder Woman her own trilogy of films. In terms of who will be involved in GLASS CEILING, current names being suggested are the likes of Spider-Woman, Spider-Girl, Black Cat, Silver Sable, and Silk.

It really does seem like Sony are in quite the pickle with their Spider-Man property. It almost beggars belief that the studio is having so much trouble with a character that has been one of the most popular characters in comics for so many decades. That said, they’re current answer to any possible issues seems to be to just throw more action and more characters at the franchise as they desperately try to compete with the MCU and with 20th Century Fox’s X-Men world. It’s even been speculated that Drew Goddard’s THE SINISTER SIX may actually be used as a mild reboot for the series, which seems farcical at this stage.

Treat this as purely a rumour for now, although expect to hear more as and when things develop.
