IN PRAISE OF PETER BEALE

George Lucas and I both owe the same person a gigantic “thank you”.

He’s somebody you’ll never have heard of, one of those behind-the-scenes movers and shakers. His name is Peter Beale and he was managing director of 20th Century Fox Productions in their Soho Square London offices from 1973 to 1978.

As such, he reviewed lots of new projects during this key period, including a space opera homage to those Saturday morning cliffhanger Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers type serials. It was entitled The Adventures of Luke Spacewalker.

Dear Dez,

I am glad to see that he magazine has survived so long. While I can take credit for helping the film happen it was the genius and enthusiasm of George Lucas that created it and the courage and foresight of 20th Century Fox's Alan Ladd Junior who sent it to me to work out how to make it and who actually took the financial risk to make it.

Welcome back, Mr Skinn.

I remember as if it was yesterday, my first glimpse of anything Star Wars related was the cover of House of Hammer 16. (My first thought was WTF? A photo?? I felt cheated out of my fix of those fantastic painted covers.)

Starburst was a life changer to genre movie fans in those far off, pre internet days. Hell, we were geeks before the term was even coined. It's great to see the title alive again, and an honour to be a part of it.

Just to add, that artwork is an amazing thing to see, who would have thought that all these years later I would be working with that logo on a brand new site dedicated to Mr Skinn's original vision?
