Mission: Impossible franchise veteran Ving Rhames, Renfield and The Menu star Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) and Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live) have joined Alcon Entertainment’s animated feature adaptation of Garfield. Marvel co-stars Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson were already confirmed for the project.

Garfield hails from Chicken Little and Emperor’s New Groove director Mark Dindal, and is of course based on Jim Davis’ cartoon strip which follows a cynical, lazy, lasagne-loving cat and his interactions with owner Jon Arbuckle and dog Odie (the target of much of the feline’s bullying). David Reynolds (Finding Nemo) writes the screenplay.

No word yet on who the new cast members will be voicing, but we already know that Pratt will lend his voice to the titular feline, while Samuel L. Jackson is set to play a brand-new character named Vic, Garfield’s dad.

Davis’ iconic strip has been adapted many times over already, including a number of films – most memorably, Garfield: The Movie and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties from 20th Century Fox, in which Bill Murray voiced everyone’s favourite orange cat. Let’s just say Pratt has some very big paws to fill.

Sony recently announced that Garfield would release in cinemas from February 16th, 2024.
