A text adventure based on Douglas Adams’ magnum opus The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has been made available on the BBC website in honour of the 30th anniversary of the game’s initial release.

For those of you born in the ‘90s (or the ‘00s for that matter), in the dark ages of the 20th Century when computer gaming was in its infancy there were once games released with little or no visual content. Instead of moving around graphically rendered landscapes, text adventures verbally described your surroundings and required you to type in commands to proceed. Think of them like a novel where you had to figure out the story yourself or an RPG with a railroad plot where the GM wouldn’t let you advance unless you worded your actions in a specific way.

H2G2’s obscurely constructed gameplay, several possible puzzle failures that rendered the game unwinnable, required knowledge of Adams’ work and sadistic preponderance for killing you in unexpected and amusing ways gained it a reputation for being one of the most bastard-hard games ever created (and yes, this includes Battletoads). Think you can beat it? Go ahead.
