Gaming News: MECHWARRIOR ONLINE Developer Attempts to Censor then Hide Negative Press

Written by Callum Shephard Monday, 23 September 2013

Gaming News

In a follow-up story involving Piranha Games Inc., it seems the developer took an adverse reaction to negative press. Attempting to first rename the article on their forums then censor it, and finally hide it from anyone outside the community. Worse still, this has been alleged to not be an isolated incident.

This specific case began when members noticed that the thread title, copied almost directly from the previously linked article, had been re-worded to list “Starburst: MWO Faces False Accusations Of Widespread Advertising”. When it was realised this had taken place, the following posts were made:

While potentially only an error on a moderator’s part, the following response to requests for a formal apology, see below, were not encouraging. First seemingly deleting the thread only to then have it re-appear locked and re-titled, with any and all posts commenting upon the re-naming missing. The reasoning listed was only that discussions of moderation had taken place. Interestingly, the thread was locked and posted in by the same moderator accused by others of having been editing thread titles which show the game in a negative light: Niko Snow.

After a thread was made accusing the moderators of abusive manipulation, the thread was then re-opened briefly only to then disappear again. This time it was moved out of the section devoted to discussing Mechwarrior Online articles and news reports and into the area Jettisoned Communication, devoted to supposedly off topic discussions. An area which cannot be accessed unless you have a forum account and out of sight of the public eye. It was briefly given the correct title:

Before it was changed to simply “Starburst” and any posts requesting it be returned to its original sub-forum were deleted:

The thread was eventually given back its original title but remains in Jettisoned Communication.

Whether or not accusations of PGI’s activities like this on the forums being commonplace for negative press are true or not, this is none the less a disturbing trend. First renaming a thread title to suggest the content within is false, then censoring all comments about moderator editing without permission and moving it out of the public eye. Given the negative opinion of the developer by many on the forums, this is not behaviour which encourages trust by the community.

You can see for yourself, both Starburst Topics are jettisoned.

Now they've both been deleted. Great job disproving claims of censorship PGI!

Soooo why do 10 year old goons have their own pretend news site now?

You failed to take over the game through #savemwo and you will fail through metacritic and you will fail through your bad attempts at journalism.

Also the thread isn't even Jettisoned. Liar.

Wow, so it's Goons huh? Trying to take over? Amazing what the white knights are down to now. You can see for yourself, both Starburst Topics are jettisoned.
Too bad they can't censor the whole internet. I wouldn't worry about people spending money on this disaster. White Knights better start returning cans or what not to finance your game.

The minority that screams and screams that is part of the MWO community is ignored (rightfully so).

The people who matter, spend money. Sorry to burst your bubble kiddies.

Its the people who spent money who are complaining. The people with no investment just leave

Well now a thread pointing out this article has been censored. Just think if you are a new player and want to try this F2P, the devs are shifty and you will be investing in shady dealings. They are in over their heads, but instead of admitting it and trying to fix the problems they spend time and effort trying to hide things.
they have paid people to shill for them on NGNG and try to bomb the meta critic ratings with 10s so people won't see the train wreck this game is heading for.
BTW this "vocal minority" sure gets a lot of attention eh?
Any of the white knights find anything good being written about their beloved game?

Common practice for these guys. Niko is well known for trolling their own forums, even going and trolling Reddit.

Garth, the community rep contacted metacritic and got better than 200 negative reviews purged from there too.

200? Hahahhah try like 5.

They've allowed the threads to continue despite them being the kind that almost any other Dev would either lock down or remove

Fail article. The difference between a journalist and a blogger...

The "vocal minority" are the ones that have spent a large amount of money on the game. They are the same people that bought founders packs to the tune of 9 million. These people have a right to be upset about how poorly the game has been developed in the last 9-10 months.

The forums are their property. Freedom of speech is not guarenteed.

It's not limited to the forums either, there's been a widespread campaign by both PGI and their paid podcast team to hide all the negative reviews on metacritic, there was such a MASSIVE outpouring of player outrage on metacritic that the game was on the front page 4 times despite 3 attempts to have it censored by PGI, with no end in sight! They keep having the review removed from the front page but there are so many negative reviews that every time they remove it it gets replaced by another one!

You can't sweep angry players under the rug forever!
