WORLD OF WARCRAFT to Introduce 'Gold for Game Time'

WORLD OF WARCRAFT continues to prove top dog of the MMORPG genre, sustaining its subscription model for ten years where many others, including RIFT and STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC, have been forced to go free-to-play with a series of in-game transactions instead. While others, like FINAL FANTASY ONLINE, enjoy a similar subscription-based model, it remains Blizzard’s mighty behemoth at the forefront.

In a stroke of genius, Blizzard have announced an experimental way for players to exchange in-game gold for game time. These take the form of game tokens, which can be bought from the auction house and traded for time, keeping you in time and other players in gold. Of course, this could lead to Blizzard cut out of the loop altogether.

According to the company’s Battle.net FAQ’s, “The gold value of a Token will be determined dynamically based on supply and demand. When you put a Token up for sale, you’ll be quoted the amount of gold you’ll receive upon a successful sale. If you then decide to place the Token up for sale, that amount is locked in, and the gold will be sent to your mailbox after another player purchases your Token.”

The idea might be one that sees Blizzard at the business end of a shit storm, but it proves they’re still more than willing to take risks even if they don’t all pay off (DIABLO 3 auction house, we’re looking at you).
