Interview: Tony Lee, Consulting Editor For IDW's DOCTOR WHO/STAR TREK Crossover

Interviews

IDW comics have announced a Star Trek, Doctor Who crossover. At the recent Big Finish Day 2 convention in London Starburst correspondent Kris Griffin (@kristhescript) caught up with consulting editor Tony Lee to talk about the project...

Starburst: Tony, tell us more about this exciting announcement.

Tony Lee: It's going to be a Star Trek: TNG and 11th Doctor, Amy and Rory team-up to fight a combined threat of the Cybermen and The Borg. As you can understand it's incredibly epic and fantastical and it's utterly insane. It's being written by Scott and David Tipton who are very much known for the Trek work. I've been brought on board to ensure the Doctor's side of it is well established. I'm more of a consulting editor than a writer. That being said everybody is chipping in and making sure it is being looked after. J.K. Woodward, the artist, is drawing it which is a massive massive feather in a cap for anybody really and it's utterly insane. We've just gone through the first script. It starts with full scale destruction, you've got Rory, Amy and the Doctor just doing what they do best. You've got the Star Trek Next Generation crew basically at the peak of their series so to speak and it's going to be interesting to see how this one goes.

The Cybermen-Borg thing is electrifying isn't it because it's either assimilated or deleted... what's your choice?

Well the Cybermen were never keen on resistance either but yes it's interesting because you've got this kind of thing where they're not part of the same world but something happens where they are. Things are not so much merging but things have already merged. I'm not going to give too much away but it's an adventure that only the two people together can really stop and you've got loads of meetings; you've obviously got Guinan in there and you've got the crew and the Doctor is in there. You've got a few little homages to other things in there as well.

And which Cybermen are we getting? Are we getting the new series Cybermen, early or Earthshock?

I honestly cant answer that one because I can't give you a definitive answer. There's so many different things that could happen. You might get all of them or none of them.

And how did you get involved in this?

I was coming off the Doctor Who ongoing series. I'd gone up to issue 12 and I wanted to have a break as at the time I'd been solidly been writing Doctor Who comics for three or four years. It fit perfectly as IDW wanted to go in a different direction with the Doctor and get a new team on board. As I came off Denton said he had something else he wanted me to look at which was this uber-super secret thing which at the time they didn't even know if they were going to be allowed to do or not. So we sat down and we discussed it and then I was brought on board with the team. At the end of the day it's very much Scott and David's book. They came up with the pitch, they got the idea and then I've come along and suggested things, so yes, it was a nice opportunity.  It's not as much as work as it is the ongoing Doctor Who for me, that said, it can be a logistical nightmare.

And how long ago was this? What's been the time period between it being broken and you finding out you were on board?

They were talking about it late last year and I was brought in around the same time. I have no idea how long they've been discussing it. It must have been hard just to get the BBC, CBS and Universal to agree on it. The fact that they did that was just amazing but I've heard that the BBC agreement actually came from Stephen Moffat himself so yeah I think Stephen Moffat's a fan and wants to see it.

And when to we expect the first issue?

May I believe.  It comes out in May and it's 8 issues until the end of the year.

A big thanks to Tony Lee for his time in talking to us and for more information visit the IDW comics website HERE.
