Sci-Fi Scarborough has announced that Steve Howarth will be appearing at the popular convention. Steve has built models and ships from some of the most memorable and iconic films and TV shows. King of the scratch builders and a model making legend with a list of gasp-inducing credits will be available to chat and will be bringing a few of his creations with him for convention goers to admire.

Steve’s model making career, like so many of his contemporaries, started out as a hobby, and, like many of them, no longer has the time for making models as a hobby, due to the increased workload of tighter and tighter deadlines.

Brought up on a diet of Gerry Anderson as a child, e.g. Supercar, Fireball XL5, it was not until later in life that Steve would re-discover his creative roots and passion for model making, blaming Blade Runner in the main, for this re-kindling.

Working alone, he produced his first models. Yet even these early and rather crude attempts (by his own standards) earned him 'best of class' trophies at Wembley's Model Engineers Exhibition in 1982 and 1983 and then entry into Herts College of Art and Design for a HND model making course, which he completed with Distinctions. "One of the most consistently skilled and productive students ever to pass through the course" (Brian Holder - course leader).

From college, Steve went straight into architectural model making with regular intervals doing product model making. Always with the dream of working in entertainment in the back of his mind, Steve set about building up his portfolio and broadening his experience with as many and as varied contracts as possible, sub-contracting for many companies. Steve believed that by working for many companies, he would experience many more techniques, than if he were to stay with one company for many years and this is reflected in the range of materials that he works with.

Steve’s credits include The Crystal Maze, The Wind In The Willows, Space Precinct, Red Dwarf, Doctor Who, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager, Men In Black, Demolition Man, Batman Forever, Thunderbirds: The Movie, Prometheus, Moon. Check out his work at: www.modelminiatures.co.uk.

Co-organiser Steve Dickinson “Over the moon with Steve coming back, his fantastic work is scattered throughout geek TV and film, he always brings a thing of beauty for his table, can’t wait to see what shows up.
