“1972’s They Have Changed Their Face has wallowed in obscurity for far too long,” claims Josh Saco of Cigarette Burns Cinema, “it’s time for us to embrace it, for all its prescient terror.”

On September 16th, Cigarette Burns Cinema hosts the first UK screening of this rare but fantastic Italian vampire thriller-cum-allegory-of-capitalism as part of the Barbican‘s autumn film season, The Colour of Money.

Written and directed by Corrado Farina (who also made better known Baba Yaga), They Have Changed Their Face won the Golden Leopard for Best First Film at the Locarno Film Festival but sank into obscurity on general release. Starring Adolfo Celi, They Have Changed Their Face, draws upon the legend of Dracula and updates it to a 1970s Italy setting; chewing on ideas of media manipulation and consumerism along the way.

When lowly automotive employee Alberto Valle (Giuliano Esperante) is called to a mysterious, hill-top mansion to be told of his promotion to head of an auto company he soon realises that his employer, Giovanni Nosferatu (Aldolfo Celi), is much more than the head of an automotive company…

With an introduction by Patricia MacCormack, Professor of Continental Philosophy at Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge, They Have Changed Their Face is a sly piece of satire and a fitting inclusion in the Barbican’s season of films and talks on the evils of economics.
