See George Lucas’ THX 1138 with LIVE Re-score!

Released in 1971, many years before Star Wars, George Lucas’ THX 1138 became an instant cult film. Now, the popular electronica/rapcore/punk combo Asian Dub Foundation have composed a new score, which they will be performing live accompanying a screening of the film.

The film takes place in a totalitarian future in which chemical brainwashing, CCTV, and android police brutality are the norm. Way ahead of its time in both look and content, the film stars Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence and features enough offbeat visuals to fit perfectly for Asian Dub Foundation’s musical genre mash-up treatment.

The first performance of the score was on June 19th at London’s Barbican, but the band are currently on a full 10-date UK tour, which stops off at Manchester’s stunning Bridgewater Hall on October 19th. Tickets are available to buy now from the box office and on the website.

Check out the video below for an example of what to expect; it’s certainly different, but looks to be something very interesting and exciting. And considering how Lalo Schiffrin’s original score (as well as screenwriter Walter Murch’s sound design) have been sampled by many artists such as Nine Inch Nails and Orbital over the years, it seems a natural progression for ADF to tackle the film, following their previous soundtrack re-score for the ultra-violent French shocker La Haine.
