An event at the Edinburgh International Book Festival on Thursday will see SALTIRE: IONNSAIGH, the Gaelic translation of fantasy superhero comic SALTIRE: INVASION, officially launched upon the world.

The text and dialogue was translated by Raghnaid Sandilands (the translator for the Gaelic version of ASTERIX AND THE PICTS, ASTERIX ANN AN DŨTHAICH NAN CRUITHNEACH) with the support of Dougie Beck, Drama Development Officer of Gaelic arts festival charity Fèisean nan Gàidheal and Ian MacDonald, the director of the Gaelic Book Council.

In a recent interview with STARBURST, SALTIRE writer John Ferguson, a keen supporter of the Gaelic language, stated that, “[If] it helps people learn Gaelic by having a big blue superhero to relate to then that’s absolutely fantastic. We’ve got the support of the Gaelic Book Council, and the Gaelic schools are very interested in getting their pupils to embrace it… Gaelic is an important part of our history and it should be an important part of our present.

Further books in the SALTIRE series will also be published in Gaelic, while a Scots edition of the book is currently in production and plans are underway to also translate the book into French and German.
