Dead Girls

There is some time left to contribute to the Indigogo campaign to publish a trade paperback of cyberpunk comic DEAD GIRLS. Written by cult sci-fi author Richard Calder and adapted from his 1992 novel of the same name, DEAD GIRLS was serialised in speculative fiction magazine MURKY DEPTHS before individual comics were published to expand and conclude the story after the magazine ceased publication.

Dead Girls takes place in the near future where second-generation virus nanotech initially spread by sexbots has corrupted the human gene pool to the extent that when many girls reach adolescence they begin to mutate into half-human semi-cyborg vampires called Dolls, the Dead Girls of the title.

The series follows teenager Primavera Bobinski, cursed to develop slowly into a Doll and desperate to escape the concentration camp fate awaiting her, and Iggy Zwakh, her best friend/lover who is stays with her partly out of devotion, and addiction to her narcotic bites, the method by which the technovirus propagates itself.

Taken from the muted sepia dystopia of neo-fascist London to the neon-soaked high-tech sleaze of Bangkok, the series charts Primavera’s development from playful but doomed schoolgirl to femme fatale assassin wielding the power of quantum magic. (“Is that all you desiccated specimens of antediluvian slime-mould have for me?”) The young lovers search for somewhere and somehow they can truly be together.

As well as a copy of the 208-page graphic novel itself, other perks include a box set of the completed comic series, back issues of MURKY DEPTHS in which the comic originated, a signed first edition hardback of the original novel, and a limited edition hardback of the first five episodes of the series.
