Comic News: DC Announces An Unlikely JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA

At FanExpo Canada, DC Comics announced a new ongoing title debuting in 2013 . . . Justice League of America! The series, written by current Justice League scribe Geoff Johns and with art by David Finch (Batman: The Dark Knight), won’t be your grandma’s JLA. The team’s roster is set to mix a few veterans with a handful of unlikely Leaguers.

The first promotional image to be released features a squad led by Steve Trevor (whose death in Justice League #11 evidently failed to stick). The team’s roster includes Martian Manhunter, Stargirl, Vibe, Green Arrow, Katana, Hawkman, the new Green Lantern (debuting in September’s Green Lantern #0), and perhaps most surprisingly of all . . . Catwoman.

In an interview with MTV Geek, Johns said: “The idea of why the JLA forms, and what it is, and what it’s in reaction to... It kind of spins out of Justice League #12; what happens in that, and then subsequent issues, because JLA comes out next year some time. But the book itself is a group of heroes that aren’t necessarily coming together because they want to be together... They’ve been selected specifically. They all want, or need something that Steve Trevor, and the other person behind the scenes that’s in charge of this team can provide.”

The motley crew of heroes will earn their stripes as a team as they face off against the aptly named Secret Society of Super Villains. In pre-reboot canon, Catwoman had fought alongside the League against the Secret Society of which she was formerly a member (see Justice League’s “Crisis of Conscience” arc), but the New 52 version of Catwoman doesn’t seem to be the type to play well with others. With a lineup that includes characters with such disparate personalities (imagine the conversations between Catwoman and Hawkman), it won’t be surprising if the team gets along as well as a bag of feral cats. At first, anyway.

Johns will continue to write Justice League after Justice League of America launches and the two titles will certainly see their stories converge, though Johns was hesitant to give away any further details. Johns also implied that Jeff Lemire’s Justice League Dark would likely see some tie-ins with the other two titles in the future. DC has yet to announce a specific release date but 2013 suddenly seems incredibly far away.
