With Skyfall set to hit cinemas in October and the next film in the series due in 2014, James Bond fans can be forgiven for feeling like lucky people. These same people will be pleased that a new James Bond novel was announced recently. Written by William Boyd, perpetrator of the magnificent “Nat Tate” scandal, it will be released in 2013 to give us some more Bondage between the films and will take place in 1969. Hopefully between now and the book's release, we’ll actually find out the title.
This is the third of the recent novels authorised by the Fleming estate, following Sebastian Faulks’ Devil May Care and Jeffrey Deaver’s Carte Blanche. Unlike those novels, the book descends into the murky waters of middle age. According to Boyd, there will be more of a focus on the fact that Bond is a middle-aged spy (he’s 45 in this one). Time will tell if 007 will need to inhale pills or if he will be bemoaning the state of air travel in a sternly worded letter.
How a character like Bond can be middle-aged when he has the potential to live forever is very much up for debate at this point. One thing is for sure though – if there is a single quotation of Roger Murtaugh’s maxim “I’m too old for this s**t”, there will be thousands of purists hurling their copies into their nearest wall.
